A Summer Family Session in Provo Canyon
There’s something pretty special about coming back home.
The Banks family now calls Nashville home, but Utah will always hold a little piece of their story. With Mom originally from Utah, a trip back to the mountains felt like the perfect excuse to slow down, spend time together, and document this season of their family.
We met in Provo Canyon on a warm summer evening, surrounded by golden grasses, wild thistles, and the mountains that make Utah feel like Utah. And honestly, it was one of those sessions where everything just felt easy.
Three little kids, a whole lot of personality, and plenty of movement made this session exactly what I love about family photography.
We didn't spend our time trying to make everyone sit perfectly and smile at the camera. Instead, the kids ran, cuddled, climbed all over their parents, and soaked up every bit of attention from Mom and Dad. There were giggles, little moments of chaos, and the kind of genuine connection that you can't pose. Those are always my favorite photographs.
Dad, a country songwriter based in Nashville, brought a little bit of that Tennessee charm to the Utah mountains, complete with his cowboy hat. Watching him interact with his kids while Mom loved on them made it so clear that these little moments are the ones worth remembering.
My favorite part of family photography is that years from now, these photographs won't just remind them what everyone looked like.
They'll remember their daughter's tiny hands.
They'll remember the way their boys looked at each other.
They'll remember their little ones climbing all over them.
They'll remember the mountains in the background and the warm summer evening they spent together.
And Mom will be able to remember what it felt like to hold her baby in the very place that has been part of her own story.
That's what I want family photographs to do.
Not just document a family, but preserve a feeling.
I'm so grateful I got to spend an evening with the Banks family in Provo Canyon and capture a little piece of their Utah story. ♡
If you're traveling back to Utah to visit family, returning to a place that holds special meaning, or simply want to document your family exactly as they are right now, I'd love to photograph it for you.
